Cuban Scholarship Programme still operational

SCHOLARSHIPS being offered by the Republic of Cuba to Caribbean nationals are still available despite economic challenges faced by that country, according to Ernesto Soberon Guzman, Director of the Division of Consular Affairs and Cuban Residents Abroad.
During a two-day visit to Guyana to discuss matters of migration Guzman told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that the scholarship programme still exists. He said that the Cuban government is offering a special programme to “students with Cuban parents” and such persons will have an opportunity to study medicine in Cuba.

Guzman’s reassurance of the Cuban Government’s commitment to offering scholarships to its “friends in the Caribbean region,” is a representation of the long-standing relationship between the Spanish-speaking country and the region. Over the past four decades, Cuba has provided thousands of scholarships to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nations to assist in their national development. Further, the thirty-year-old CARICOM-Cuba Scholarship Programme has allowed for the education of thousands of Guyanese and strengthened the bilateral relations between the two countries.
