No bail for Eccles taxi driver on alleged rape charge

AN Eccles, East Bank Demerara taxi driver was, on Tuesday, February 19, 2019, remanded to prison by Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty, for engaging in sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl.

Jaowel Williams, 32, made his appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which was read in camera.
Particulars of the charge alleged that, Williams, between January 1, 2019, and February 15, 2019, at Farm, East Bank Demerara, he engaged in sexual activity with a child under the age of 16.
Magistrate McGusty remanded Williams to prison until March 11, 2019.

According to reports, Williams is known to the victim’s family and would often stay at their Farm, EBD home. It is alleged that, during the period mentioned in the charge, he raped the teenager.

The victim confided in her mother and the matter was reported to the police. Williams was arrested and charged.
