GUYANA’s Ambassador to Cuba, Halim Majeed, has been in discussions with the Cuban Rice Importing Agency, ALIMPORT, to explore increasing Guyana’s rice exports to Cuba this year.

During last month, Ragindra Persaud, chairman of the Nand Persaud Group of Companies and Ambassador Majeed met with ALIMPORT in Havana, Cuba, to review the current state of Cuba’s rice imports.

At that meeting, it was agreed in principle that Cuba could absorb some 130,000 metric tonnes of rice from Guyana.

Ambassador Majeed also recently met with rice miller, Feyaad Hack, of Region Five to explain that rice millers would have to be prepared to supply the Cuban market in a timely manner.

Majeed also subsequently met with Tamesh Jagmohan, President of Pure Harvest, Inc., who has recently acquired two rice mills in Essequibo and Mahaicony.

Guyana and Cuba established diplomatic relations on December 8, 1972.
The two countries share a strong bilateral relationship which has been characterised by many exchanges at the government level and cooperation under the Guyana/Cuba Joint Commission.
