Permaul’s five-wicket haul puts Guyana on brink of victory against Hurricanes

LEFT-ARM spinner Veerasammy Permaul spun his way to five wickets and the Guyana Jaguars to the brink of victory against nemeses, Leeward Islands Hurricanes, at the close of play on day three in their second round clash of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Four-Day Championship.

When play continues today, the final day, at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, Guyana will need to take three wickets and chase what is expected to be a low target, given that Hurricanes only have a 23-run lead in the second innings with seven batsmen already back in the pavilion.
Scores in the match: Hurricanes 182 all out in 62.3 overs and 130-7 in 56 overs; Jaguars 289 all out in 115.5 overs.

Although rain restricted play yesterday, weather forecast predicts a mostly sunny Sunday over Antigua.
Continuing from an overnight score of 215-5, defending champions Guyana batted for an additional 32 overs and added a further 74 runs, with experienced batsman Vishaul Singh scoring 90.

Singh, who struck nine fours in 209 balls at the crease, added 49 runs with wicketkeeper batsman Anthony Bramble for the sixth wicket, before the latter fell for 25 runs (2×4).
Although Singh added 32 runs to his overnight score, it was Leewards, led by off-break bowler Rahkeem Cornwall, who controlled the opening session.

Romario Shepherd, played his part with 18 runs from 77 balls (2×4), but Permaul (1) who was run-out, Rajendra Chandrika, Gudakesh Motie (0) and Keon Joseph (0) fell cheaply.
Cornwall finished with four wickets, including that of Singh.

FIVE WICKET HAUL
Test cricketer Permaul bowled for almost half of the Leewards innings and he delivered. The 29-year-old finished with five wickets for 49 runs from 24 overs (six of which were maidens). He took the early wickets of openers Montcin Hodge (15) and Keacy Carty (23) and skipper Devon Thomas (1) before fellow left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie bowled Akeem Saunders for 17.

Permaul then captured the wickets of Orlando Peters (8) and Cornwall (27), while Shepherd dismissed Damion Jacobs (0).
At the crease this morning is number three batsman, Jeremiah Louis (17 from 47 balls) and number nine batsman, Alzarri Joseph, on 15.
