… Round two set for December 9
THE flag will drop on a historic moment today when the KFC company joins forces with GT Motorsports for the first-ever KFC Mega Grand Prix, which gets underway at the GMR&SC headquarters at Thomas Lands at 15:00hrs.
Even more historic is that for the first time Guyanese will be treated to the North American style of karting, featuring qualifying, pre-heat and final race.
Tradtionally, there has been one qualifying session, followed by three races gridded with the first race going according to time, the second being a 50% inverted grid and the third based on second fastest qualifying time.
This time around, the North American style will be employed – qualifying will determine a place in the pre-final and the pre-final will determine a place in the final.
What it offers is racing conditions during both qualifying and pre-final in order to allow drivers to gain as much ground as they can moving forward.
In essence, wherever competitors finish in qualifying, they will start the pre-race. Wherever they finish the pre-race that will determine their race positions.
In addition to those rules, race lengths have been increased from 10 laps to 15, a factor that will be integral to determining a winner as fitness and concentration will be of paramount importance.
The qualifying remains 5 laps with pre-final set for 10 laps.
In another first, cash prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers; $40 000 for first place, $20 000 for second and $10 000 for third.
Action is set today for the 125cc Juniors, 125cc Seniors, Easy Cup Rookie and 60cc Kids Cup.
