Thieves mar family reunion

–strike during stop on way from airport

MERE hours touching down here, a US-based Guyanese couple is now counting their losses after thieves broke into their vehicle and carted off over $3M worth of electronics and jewellery.

According to reports, Fareezah Rambali, her husband Vicky and his brother arrived at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) early Thursday morning and were met by relatives with two minibuses, one for the luggage and the other to take them home.
The trio, who are reportedly here for a relative’s one-year memorial service, made a stop at the Kamboat Restaurant in Alberttown at around 12:00hrs where they ate and relaxed a bit before resuming their journey.

In all, they spent about 45 minutes at the restaurant, but when they went back to the minibus, they discovered that it had been broken into and their belongings were missing.
Among items reported missing were a handbag belonging to Fareezah, and two backpacks belonging to her husband and his brother, in which were their passports, jewellery and other personal items totaling some $3M.

According to an eyewitness, two persons on a motorcycle were seen near the minibus and acting in a suspicious manner. This was corroborated by CCTV footage from the restaurant.
The matter is currently being investigated by the police.
