WELL-KNOWN Gynaecologist Dr. Guy Low in November 2017 completed a specialised four-year programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology after which he secured a Master’s Degree.
The local doctor told the Pepperpot Magazine that the American-funded programme was done in Guyana, but that he spent one month in the United States as an observer.

During the four-year training which was done at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Dr. Low described his experience as “educational and exciting” where he gained a lot.
He was working alongside specialists from the US who facilitated practical, lectures and exams where he had operating theatre experience.

Dr. Low is the holder of a Diploma from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland in Obstetrics and Gynaecology but decided he wanted to become a specialist and pursue higher education.
He related that during the course he spent one month at the Cleveland, Ohio University of Case Western where he was an observer.

Dr. Low added that he was part of the second batch of local doctors who managed to get into the programme and graduated since the programme only accepts six health professionals annually noting that is it very competitive to get in.

He explained, that in Guyana we have less than 20 gynaecologists as such, he is tasked with going to Bartica to assist at the Bartica Public Hospital because the Cuban gynaecologist is away on leave.

The doctor will be in Bartica for one week where he will be assisted by the staffers.
The doctor graduated from Medical School in 1984 and has been practising since at GPHC, where he sees a lot of caesarean section deliveries where mothers have birthing difficulties.
He also sees a lot of total cystectomy due to bleeding disorders in many women and instances of uterine fibroids, and is also at the ante-natal clinic which accommodates a large number of women and also offers family planning clinic.

Dr. Low has assisted in many deliveries at the GPHC and disclosed that per year they have about 6,500 births.
His simple advice to women as a health care professional is to get a general check-up, keep healthy, exercise and be in the know whether pregnant or not for a clean bill of health.
Dr. Low said pregnant women should visit their clinics until delivery to ensure they are healthy and their baby is doing well.

Apart from being a medical practitioner he shares his knowledge with medical students at the University of Guyana (UG) and is a local examiner for students in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the same institution.
