Persaud continues dominance in Guyana Open Golf tournament

… Joaan Deo leads in female category after day one

THE Guyana Open Golf tournament is underway at the Lusignan Golf Course, and after day one defending champion Avinash Persaud is in the lead, taking control of the leaderboard late in the afternoon.

In mostly overcast conditions for most of the entire day, the eight-time winner turned in a superb performance to grab a share of the lead on opening day.
Persaud, the Lusignan resident competing in the Men’s A Flight 0-9 handicap, ended with a gross 69 to lead with Mohanlall Dinanauth in second position with a gross 74.
The battle for golf’s Holy Grail is definitely in Persaud’s favour since Kevin Dinanauth is lurking in third place after shooting a gross 75.

Veteran player Ravi Persaud, Mahesh Shiv Raj and Max Persaud tied with a gross of 84 in the B Flight (10-18 handicap) category.
Mo Shafie is the leader in the C Flight (19-28 handicap) with a gross 84 with Guillermo Escaragga second with gross 87.

The women’s category is being led by Joaan Deo who ended with a gross 85 and a net 69. Shanella Webster is in second position with a gross 86 and a net 70 while defending champion Christine Sukhram ended yesterday with a gross 88 and a net 77 competing in the Ladies’ Flight (0-36 handicap).

In the senior flight, Esau Shamshudin is in the lead with a gross 88.
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Samuel Hinds was named an honorary member of the Lusignan Golf Club on Friday evening during the club’s champions cocktail.
Hinds, in his remarks, thanked the club, and wished the participants and organisers every success for the two-day tournament.
