Over 90 Guyanese students placed on CXC Merit List

SEVERAL Guyanese students who sat the CSEC and CAPE May/June examinations have made it on the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC)’s Merit List for outstanding performances.

The Merit List for the Caribbean Secondary Certificate of Education (CSEC) and the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) show the top 10 students in the Region for each subject offered by CXC.

Though for both CSEC and CAPE, the list was dominated by students from Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica, Guyanese students also secured some of the top spots.

Added to that, the Guyanese top performers did not only hail from the senior secondary schools, but also from some junior secondary schools.

Students from the Mackenzie High School copped the top regional spots in Agricultural Science (Double award). They were Gabriella Williams (3rd); Tevin Hercules (5th); Shiniah Layne (8th); Unique Bremner (10th); and Chelsea Tappin (10th).

Delano Roberts, from the Anna Regina Secondary School also copped 8th place; while Mohanee Motilal and Bibi Shalena Sookdeo from the St. the Joseph High and Saraswati Vidya Niketan School were placed 10th.

For the Single Award in Agricultural Science, Antoshaun Langevine of Hope Secondary and Kevin Somrah of Zeeburg Secondary placed second, while and Camecia De La Cruz of Anna Regina Secondary secured second place.

Brandon Chanderban of Queen’s College topped the Region overall for English Literature (B), while Zane Ramotar, also from Queen’s College, copped the 10th position for English Language (A).

Though missing out from the top spots for the core science subjects, Guyanese students dominated Integrated Science. Queen’s College students, Haema Dasrath (2nd), Daniel Baldeo-Thorne (4th), Mikayla DeFreitas (6th), Trisha Heeralall (6th) and Christian Pile (10th) were the top performers.

Sayyid Aabidi (4th) and Matthew Yusuf (10th), from Mae’s Secondary and Jonathan Jewram (6th) and Latifah Tashier (6th), from St. Rose’s High and the Zeeburg Secondary also scored top spots. Yusuf was also the only Guyanese to gain merit in the area of Human and Social Biology (HSB), placing sixth in the Region.

In the area of Office Administration, Harini Sookram of West Demerara Secondary (2nd), Loren Black of Marian Academy (7th); Hemanchal Persaud of Anna Regina Secondary; Trisha Heeralall of Queen’s College and Naton Hackett of St. Stanislaus College (10th), all secured top spots. Aaron Taylor of Diamond Secondary, who was placed seventh in the Region, was the only Guyanese student to secure a merit spot for Principles of Accounts (PoA).

In Principles of Business (PoB), the top candidates were Rebekeh Persaud (3rd) of St. Rose’s High School; Trisha Heeralall (5th) and Navindra Persaud (5th), both from Queen’s College; and Lennox Hopkinson (5th) of St. Stanislaus College.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Shakira Bolo from Anna Regina Secondary topped the Region for Religious Education with Aliyah Anthony of Bishop’s High School came in at sixth and Sayyid Aabidi of Mae’s Secondary at eight.

Aarti Hooblall and Navindra Persaud, both of Queen’s College, copped fifth place for Social Studies.

Selma Rodriguez from the New Guyana School emerged the Region’s best Spanish student, while placing for Guyana also was Ashley Valle (3rd) from the Marian Academy.

Queen’s College students Yashoda Samaroo (3rd) and Michael English (5th) were awarded merits in Electronic Document Preparation and Management (EDPM).

Karishma Haridat of St. Rose’s High and Anuradha Ramtahal and Hannah Krishram from St. Stanislaus College secured sixth place.

With Portuguese being introduced only recently, Guyanese students occupied all merit positions. Sudesh Narine, from President’s College led the way, followed by Romayne Atkinson of the Brickdam Secondary school and Trisha Heeralall of Queen’s College, who both scored second place. They were followed by Jezebel Leo (4th) of St. Ignatius Secondary; Shauntel Nurse (5th), Haema Dasrath (6th) and Krystal Cummings (7th), all from Queen’s College; and Nectar Prince (8th), Jesse Thomas (9th) and Mikayla DeFreitas (10th) from St. Stanislaus College, President’s College and Queen’s College, respectively.

FAMILY AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Scoring several of the top spots for Family and Resource Management were Shakira Bholo (3rd) of Anna Regina Secondary; Zoe Sills (3rd) of Mackenzie High; Sasha Chattergoon (5th) of Aurora Secondary and Tyrell Adams (8th) of North Georgetown Secondary.

Charran Woarti of New Amsterdam Multilateral topped the Region for Industrial Technology (Mechanical) while Isiah Grant from the Christianburg/Wismar secondary placed seventh.

In the CAPE realm, Virlyn Gibson of Queen’s College placed fourth regionally in Agricultural Science Unit I, while Keith DaSilva, from President’s College copped second in Unit II.

Rawletta Barrow, also from Queen’s College placed sixth for Economics Unit I; Sasha Nurse, from St. Rose’s High brought second for Logistics and Chain Supply Unit I; and Michael Bhopaul of Queen’s College placed eighth for French Unit I and Pure Mathematics Unit I.

Renuka Persaud of Queen’s College placed sixth for Information Technology Unit II and Vishani Ragobeer, also from Queen’s College, placed 10th for Sociology Unit II.

In Green Engineering Unit I, Queen’s College student Akeem Babb topped the Region, while Jamal Thomas (2nd) of Queen’s College; Shakeem Spencer (4th) and Javier Wickham (6th) of President’s College and Donella Sullivan (7th) of Queen’s College followed closely behind him. In Unit II, Fatima Karim secured the top spot while Kareem Wilson placed 10th. They both hailed from Queen’s College.

Guyana dominated Integrated Mathematics, which is a single-unit subject. Topping the Region was Min Wen Gong of Queen’s College, who was followed by her colleagues Jamie Yearwood (2nd); Rajiv Muneshwer, Sariah Singh and Shanyx Smith (3rd); Ronaldo McGarrell (6th); Fatima Karim (7th); Aadilah Alli (8th) and Juan Haynes (9th). Nicholas Jordan of Bishop’s High copped 10th place. Muneshwer also placed seventh for Applied Mathematics Unit II.

For Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology Unit I, Ibraheem Bacchus of Queen’s College placed third, while Kadesha Lewis from the Bishops’ High was placed eighth. Bacchus also topped the Region for the second unit (Option A) of this same subject.

Students from Bishop’s High also made their mark on Financial Service, Unit I. They were Judo Alleyne (3rd), Rebekeh Bhupaul (6th), Theodore Adams (8th) and Shameena Mohamed (10th). And for Unit II of this subject, Shafeek Rayman of Queen’s College topped the Region.

In Law Unit II, Sherlyn Semple of New Amsterdam Multilateral earned third place, while Anadia David of Bishop’s High placed ninth.
