GTT honours cancer warriors

TO mark the end of their month of Pinktober activities, the Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GTT) honoured six cancer warriors with a Dinner/Gala at the Marriott Hotel on Sunday.

The women recognised in an evening of elegance included: Nicola Shultz, Francine Leitch, Pamela Hinds, Rosaline Clarke, Bonita Insanally and Marilyn Dewar.

Invited to speak was Minister of Public Health Volda Lawrence, herself a cancer warrior, who recognised GTT for all the work it continues to do in raising awareness for all types of cancers in Guyana.

In his remarks, GTT Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Justin Nedd said: “In Guyana, cancer creates an outsized disruption in our lives and as individuals; we silently fight the battles and hope for the best possible outcomes. For this reason, GTT has decided – hand in hand with corporate Guyana – to unite to make Guyana a stronger society in mind and body”.

In a release, the company stated that it believes that with better education, awareness and treatment, Guyana will have a healthier society; more mothers will be able to go home to their children and fathers will be strong enough to prepare meals for the children and watch them grow.

These are some of the reasons that GTT is passionate about raising funds for organisations, such as Beacon Foundation, Cancer Institute of Guyana, Periwinkle, the Guyana Cancer Foundation and the Giving Hope Foundation.

“We believe that as we come together to make a difference, these organisations can pool their efforts and change lives, one individual at a time… ultimately, the hope of GTT is to ensure that every person in Guyana is routinely screened – PSAs for men, and pap smears and mammograms for women. This must become routine, as frequent as yearly, as we strive to remove the stigma associated with cancer,” the release stated.

GTT expressed thanks to its team for the support received, and has made known its intention to push for a stronger cancer programme in Guyana by 2022.
