A 30-year-old mason was on Wednesday spared a jail sentence but was fined $75,000 instead, after he confessed to stealing a woman’s phone.

Safraz Khan of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore.

Particulars of the charge alleged that Khan, on September 24, 2018, at Church Street, Alberttown, stole a Samsung 6Edge from Shauna Caesar.

Khan admitted to stealing the cellphone and told the court that he was sorry for his action. The magistrate, after considering Khan’s early guilty plea, fined him $75,000 or three months imprisonment.
