SENIOR Magistrate, Leron Daly on Friday remanded a 23-year-old man to prison for drug trafficking, after he was caught by police throwing a parcel of cannabis over the Camp Street Prison fence.

Reon Jonas is accused of having 50 grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking on August 29 at Durban Street. He denied the charge.

Police Prosecutor, Sanj Singh told the court that the accused was caught red handed by police who were on patrol at the prison as he threw the bag over the fence. The prison authorities managed to retrieve the parcel which contained several zip-locked packets of cannabis. Jonas was arrested by the officer.

Singh objected to the defendant being granted his pretrial liberty citing the seriousness and nature of the charge. The Magistrate ruled in the prosecution’s favour and remanded Jonas to prison until October 12.
