… hailed a huge success

THE Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) yesterday concluded its 2018 Cricket Summer Camp which focused on the future generation of the club and the country’s cricketers with specific reference to the essentials of being an ambassador on and off the field.

The camp, which began on August 13 at the club’s Queenstown location, saw close to 117 aspiring cricketers participate.

Coach Garvin Nedd told Chronicle Sport, that the camp achieved its objectives, since there was an elaborate cricket curriculum, which was aimed at developing every participant’s cricketing talent along with fitness.

“Yea, definitely the camp had offered a range of coaching programmes, which had provided an excellent opportunity for the participants to develop into a future-ready cricketer and sportsperson. They received extensive coaching and training sessions to develop every aspect of the game, starting from the first-timers, who were provided the basic introduction to the game of cricket,” Nedd said.

Meanwhile, in delivering the feature address at the closing ceremony yesterday, Assistant Director of Sport, Melissa Dow-Richardson, stressed the importance of academics and sports to be married as it brings about balance in an individual.

“I congratulate you … those young persons, those young people who took the decision to participate in this most useful developmental activity at such an important time in your life,” Dow-Richardson pointed out.

She added, “It’s up to you to take what you have learnt and make the best of it. Fundamentally, the game theoretical and practical elements are solid tools for life on and off the pitch. Sports is not on the green or on the pitch.”

“Sports functions in many other ways from those areas as well … in administration, in coaching, in training, in legal elements, sports medicine. There is a wide variety of options for you as sportspersons so don’t think that this experience that you had on the field is just for that area,” the assistant director of sports said.

Patron of DCC and Minister of State, Hon. Joseph Harmon, also spoke to the participants.
“It is important that you know first and foremost that you have participated in what I would call, a rite of passage associated with 106 years of proud tradition that can be traced back to the year 1912; the year the club was formed,” Minister Harmon said.
He pledged $250 000 to the club.

Top students of the camp received trophies while all of the attendees received certificates of participation.

The feedbacks by participants and parents were great, with parents calling for more such camps to be organised on a regular basis.
