Relatives fear teen may lose hearing

– and that justice will never be served

FAMILY members of a teenager who was shot in the face on Saturday while trying to avert an armed robbery at his Good Hope, East Coast Demerara home, are now concerned about whether justice will ever be served.

And the reason they have come to this conclusion is because the men who tried to rob them but instead shot the teen, have been since seen in the community.
According to the injured lad’s father, the two men were spotted at a wedding house in the area as recently as Sunday night. The lad is still hospitalised and may lose hearing in his left ear.

The man said that several calls were made to the Vigilance Police Station, just about a 10-minute drive from where he lives and where the shooting occurred, to pass on the information, but to date they are still waiting for the police to act on it.

The man said the police who took the first call at around 22:30hrs and gave his name as McDonald, had indicated that a patrol was on its way. This was after he was thrice given directions on how to find the wedding-house.

And when by 23:15hrs the police had not yet arrived, another call was placed to the station, and the same police rank took the call and again indicated that the patrol was on its way.

A third call placed a few hours later, and again the response was, “The police are on their way.” A check on the police station found the station locked tight, and the gate secured with a handcuff.

On a hunch, he called the 911 hotline and was advised to call the Vigilance station, and again Constable McDonald assured him that help was on the way.

The man said he eventually called a police friend all the way at Mahaica, who arrived around 01:30hrs, but by then the suspects had already left the area.

Meanwhile, the injured teen is reportedly still in hospital, and according to his father, he is not doing so well.

The police are said to be investigating the matter, and have already visited the home and took possession of the CCTV footage which they hope may aid in their probe and the suspects capture.

On the night in question, the suspects were seen circling the area and the family who was outside of their yard at the time, took evasive measures, but it was too late and by then the bandits had already pounced on them.
The teenager attempted to fight them off, and it was at that point that he was shot in the face.
