Charged for shooting money-changer

THREE weeks after a money-changer was shot to his leg during a robbery along America and Longden Streets, Georgetown, a 23-year-old man was on Tuesday charged for the crime.

Akeem Sinclair of Lodge appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and denied that on July 29 at America Street while being in the company of others and armed with a gun he robbed Rickford Richardson of $120,000 cash.

The unrepresented man told the court that he was employed at August Beverages and was the sole breadwinner of his family.

Police Prosecutor, Gordon Mansfield objected to the accused being released on bail on the grounds that a gun was used and the victim was shot to his left leg.

According to the facts presented by the prosecution, on the day in question, the accused, along with another person rode up to the victim at America and Longden Streets. The accused, who was the pillion rider, allegedly drew a gun from his waist and demanded that Richardson hand over the money he had in his hands.

The victim handed over the money and was shot to his leg. His attacker made good his escape on the motor cycle.

The Chief Magistrate ruled in favour of the prosecution and remanded Sinclair to prison until August 31.
