Corporate sponsorship for sports brings out  more positives than negatives – Minister Ramjattan

– As GSCL 2018 tournament launched

GUYANA’s Minister of Public Security and acting Prime Minister, Khamraj Ramjattan, at yesterday’s  launch of the 2nd edition of the Georgetown Softball Cricket League (GSCL) –organised Prime Minister T/20 tournament, noted the positives that comes out from corporate Guyana sponsorship of sporting activities.

Delivering the feature address yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club, Minister Ramjattan said corporate Guyana needs to support sport, as their contribution will reduce the negatives that is plaguing the society, especially amongst the youths.

He  said once the youths are involved in something positive, it will take their minds off the negative things in life and this will see society as a whole going places.

“When we have sponsors, young people’s involvement in sports will take their minds off negative things and they will become law abiding citizens” Ramjattan stated, adding that he is very supportive of the fact that the 2018 GSCL tournament will take off the negatives from the youths’ minds.

The GSCL’s inaugural Prime Minister T/20 tournament was staged last November and saw Regal Masters winning the over-45 age group category, while Speed Boat XI won the open category.

Last year there were two North American teams involved but that number has grown this year as the GSCL has received confirmation from eight North American teams which include teams from Canada and New York.

According to GSCL’s Communications Manager, John Ramsingh, to date, 15 teams are registered for the tournament and registration is still in progress. Interested teams/clubs can make contact with the GSCL before the tournament gets underway on October 19.

The tournament will be played at 10 venues with the final slated for the Everest ground on October 21. The winner of the Open category will receive $700,000 and a trophy while the winner of the Masters category will earn $600,000 and a trophy.

 The runners- up in both categories will be rewarded with $100, 000 and trophies and there will be prizes for individual performances, including a Hero motorcycle for the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, compliments of Hero Motor Cycle.

To date, 23 teams have registered to participate in the tournament and they include 15 over-45 teams and eight open teams.

The over-45 teams that have so far registered are Regal Masters, Wellman, HS, R.R, Fisherman, Parika, Success, Tropical Spring, Florida/Guyana Hope (USA), Impact (Canada), NYSCL (USA), Rebel (USA), New York Hustlers and Better Hope (USA).

In the open category, Regal All Stars, Speedboat, Farm X1, Success X1, Boots All Stars, Corriverton Spartan, Die Hard All Stars and Bartica Rangers Masters have been registered.
