Private sector boosts ACDA Emancipation celebrations

AUGUST 1, 2018, Guyana will observe Emancipation Day with celebrations across the country to commemorate the abolition of slavery in 1834. Emancipation Day is also observed in many former European colonies in the Caribbean and areas of the United States and Canada on various dates in honor of enslaved people of African descent and other forms of slavery.

The African Cultural and Development Association (ACDA) execute an annual celebration to commemorate this memorable day. This year, as they prepare to pull off the biggest celebration in 25 years, private sector businesses lend their support through monetary donations to ensure that 2018’s celebration is done with full success.

July 30, 2018, the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company presented ACDA with a check in support of their 25th Emancipation Festivities slated for tomorrow.

GTT said in a press release that they were proud to support this celebration in remembrance of the struggles encountered in the fight for freedom. They salute our Afro-Guyanese brothers and sisters as they celebrate Emancipation Day 2018.

Meanwhile, Courts Guyana is said to give a donation at their company’s annual Staff Emancipation Dress Competition on July 31, 2018.

On August 1st, Emancipation Day, thousands will take to the National Park from 10am for a string of events beginning with a Sunrise Service at 5:30am.

Events to follow include dance, drumming, dress, shanto singing, rap, poetry and reggae competitions, ACDA’s educational booth displays creative float costumes, races and other sports and games, acrobatic performances, skits and eating competitions.
