Relatives protest detention of young mother

RELATIVES of a young Rose Hall Town mother who is being detained at the Whim Police Station and is forced to breastfeed her three-week- old baby there, are up in arms, claiming that the woman was wrongfully detained.

The woman at the centre of the incident is Shivanie Beharry, 27, called “Nadia,” who recently gave birth via caesarean section.

She was detained on Thursday morning following a stabbing incident on Wednesday night at the wake of the late Wayne Sudarsingh called “Wino”, who was allegedly murdered on Saturday last.

Nadia, who has her three-week-old baby boy with her at the station, is in custody with her mother Kavita Beharry, who is allegedly the prime suspect in the stabbing incident.

According to reports, a physical altercation with Nadia’s brother and a nephew of Sudarsingh had occurred earlier in the night and the matter was resolved.

However, at around 23:30 hrs, the two men confronted each other again and relatives at the wake, along with Nadia’s family who have had a history of disagreements in the past, stepped in.

According to relatives, Kavita went with the intention of bringing her son home after he was physically abused by a relative of Sundarsingh.

However, the confrontation escalated into a brawl and it is alleged that the sister of the deceased, Maureen Sundarsingh was stabbed in the region of the abdomen during the brawl. She was rushed to hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery and remains a patient.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer Jairam Ramlakhan related that Nadia is being detained as the police are investigating a report that she held on to the victim while her mother committed the act.

He also noted that the woman is expected to be placed on bail.

This claim has been disputed by the woman’s relatives and other eyewitnesses.

“After the two of them start up the fight again, Kavita try to pull away her son and tell him to go home, but Debbie [a sister of Wayne] rush up and scramble her and those two tumble in the trench. Debbie went on top and did choking her so I went to part them, but she nephew rush up and pull out a shine thing from his waist and threaten those there. I got scared and pull back and see Maureen run straight to Nadia who did trying to pull away she brother, he did coming towards his mother and Debbie, but like somebody push Maureen off and she fall down in the trench next to Kavita. Next thing I hear she says ‘look somebody stab me,’ but I did not see anybody with a knife and Nadia was not next to her,” an eyewitness related.

The witness said she and others are willing to give statements to the police, but so far no police officer from the Rose Hall Town Outpost has interviewed any of the eyewitnesses.

Residents who spoke with this publication expressed disappointment with the police for detaining the young mother, whom they claim was a peacemaker in the incident.

They also questioned the reluctance on the part of the police to take statements from eyewitnesses.

“How the girl gon keep she baby at the station? The place not healthy and that child need to be breastfed, cause he only crying for his mother,” a relative said.

The Beharrys and Sudarsinghs who live two houses away from each other have always had a history of disagreements, since Nadia’s partner once shared a union with a sister of Maureen.

The relatives of Beharry are calling on the Guyana Police Force to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
