ACTION continued in the 23rd Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games yesterday with Guyana’s National table tennis players in action while the Men’s National hockey team won their first game, against the Dominican Republic.

Guyana’s Shemar Britton advanced to the quarter-final of the Men’s Singles competition with a loss and win to keep his medal hopes alive.

He faced Puerto Rican Brian Afanador and lost the match 3-0. In the first game Afanador defeated Britton 11-6. However, in the next two games Britton staged a fightback and lost narrowly with scores of 10-12 and 11-9.

In his second match of the day, needing a win to progress, Britton dispatched Honduras’ Jose Urbina 3-0 with games of 11-4, 11-7 to advance to the quarter-finals.

Britton’s fellow Guyanese, Christopher Franklin, also advanced to the quarter-final stage via the same route; a loss and a win.

He lost his opening match to Cuban Andy Pereira but rebounded nicely against El Salvadorian Oscar Villalta to win 3-0 with games of 11-6, 11-8 and 11-4.

The female table tennis players had a mixed day, with Chelsea Edghill losing one and winning one while Natalie Cummings had two losses with tough encounters against Guatemala’s Hidalyn Zapata.

Meanwhile Trenace Lowe booked her quarter-final spot with two convincing wins over Barbados’ Jazel Griffith and Puerto Rico’s Daniely Rios.

Over on the hockey field, the Guyanese men got into action with a convincing 3-1 win over the Dominican Republic.

Despite controlling possession and creating a couple of goal-scoring chances in the first half, they could not add the finishing touch after Dominica opened the scoring with just two minutes on the clock. Francisco Pena was the man on target for the Dominicans.

The second half though, brought respite as first, the talented Aroydy Branford hit the back of the Dominican net in the 39th minute to get the party started before Marvin Dannett and Jamarj Assanah netted twice in quick succession (49th and 50th minutes) to seal the deal for Guyana.

The table tennis players will be in action again today, with the Doubles competition while the Guyanese men will compete tomorrow in a game against Mexico.
