A SIXTY-eight-year-old miner who was allegedly busted with over three pounds of cannabis in his haversack at Port Kaituma was on Monday charged before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for drug trafficking.

John Lovell of Providence, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge which read that on July 6 at Water Front, Port Kaituma in the North West District he had 1,361 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
According to police prosecutor, Gordon Mansfield, on the day in question ranks acting on information received intercepted Lovell at Water Front, Port Kaituma.
He was searched by the police and a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis were found in his haversack.

In court Lovell told the Magistrate: “It’s the 21st century where they need to legalise the herbs.”

The chief magistrate remanded Lovell to prison and transferred the matter to the Mathews Ridge Court for August 7.
