THE caretaker of a six-year-old boy on Friday appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly to answer the charge of unlawful wounding after allegedly burning the child’s hand with an iron.

Nichole Rosemary, 43, of Bent Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, denied the charge when it was read to her and was subsequently released on $100,000 bail.
The court heard that between June 1 and June 14, 2018 at Bent Street, Werk-en-Rust, Rosemary unlawfully and maliciously wounded the boy to cause him grievous bodily harm.

The police prosecutor during his objection to bail told the court that the child was left in the care of Rosemary. It is alleged that on the date in question, the woman turned on the iron and burnt the child’s hand.

However, when the child went to school his teacher noticed the severe burns on his hands and reported the matter to the Child Care & Protection Agency where the six-year-old is currently in care.
Rosemary’s attorney Everton Lammy-Singh debunked the police claims and told the court during an application for bail that his client had caught the child playing with the irons and while attempting to get the iron away from the boy, he was burnt.

Lammy-Singh added that his client had treated the burn on the boy’s hand and when the teacher saw the injury, it was already in the process of healing.
The magistrate ordered Rosemary to stay away from the boy and adjourned the matter until July 20.
