Remanded for allegedly having gun and ammo

A 26-YEAR-OLD miner was on Tuesday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for the unlawful possession of a gun and ammunition.

Andrew Ridley, called Kevin Ridley, denied that on June 15 at Garnet Street, Albouystown, he allegedly had a .32 Taurus pistol along with eight, live matching rounds in his possession when he was not a licensed firearm holder.

Police Prosecutor Inspector Gordon Mansfield told the court, that on the day in question, police on mobile patrol though Garnet Street, Albouystown, had observed Ridley who was the pillion rider on a motor cycle and the rider acting in a suspicious manner. Ridley, on noticing the cops jumped from the motor cycle and ran away.

The police gave chase and saw Riley as he pulled a gun from his pants waist and threw it away. He was arrested and the gun was retrieved.
The Albouystown resident pleaded with the court stating that he was innocent of the charge. He said that he was beaten by the police.

Nevertheless, the prosecutor objected to Ridley being released on bail, citing the seriousness of the charge.
The chief magistrate ruled in the prosecution’s favour and remanded the defendant to prison until July 11, when the matter will be heard by Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
