WITH the clearing of canals and installation of three new pumps along the East Coast Demerara, the regional authorities continue to ensure the drainage systems remain functional during the imminent rainy season.

Chairperson of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), Region Four, Genevieve Allen said, “Because the lower East Coast Demerara is prone to flooding during the rainy season, the installation of those drainage pumps will help to alleviate the inundation that is experienced by the residents.”

In addition, the Regional Chairperson explained the new drainage systems will protect historically flood-prone areas such as Barnwell. “With the construction of the new sluice at Herstelling on the East Bank, the new housing areas … Mocha, Barnwell North, at the back of Mocha, the new housing areas at the back of Providence and Perseverance … those communities will be protected,” Allen added.

Since coming into office the current administration has undertaken several measures to mitigate the effects of climate change on the low-lying coastland.

According to the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) CEO Frederick Flatts, the installation of larger than normal irrigation pumps is in keeping with efforts to increase the rate at which waters are drained from coastal communities. (DPI)
