Driver claims haversack, not drugs

A 41-YEAR-DRIVER was on Monday remanded to prison after he was allegedly busted by Police with more than two pounds of cannabis in his haversack.

Ceon Barker of Independence Avenue, McKenzie, Linden appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus and denied that on June 3 at 111 Miles, Madhia, Potaro River, he had 1,030 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

According to reports, on the day in question the police acting on information went to a hotel where the defendant was staying and conducted a search.

They reportedly discovered in a multi-coloured haversack, parcels wrapped in clear plastic among clothes. Barker, however, admitted being the owner of the bag but denied knowledge of the ganja.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield objected to the defendant being released on bail on the grounds that no special reason was given to the court.
The magistrate ruled in the prosecution’s favour and remanded Barker to prison until June 15.
