Freed of rape: Abraham Brown.

Abraham Brown walked out the Georgetown High Court a free man on Wednesday when a 12-member jury after deliberating for more than two hours found him not guilty of rape of a child under age 16.

The matter was before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow in the Sexual Offences Court where after the verdict was announced the seemingly relieved Brown exited the courtroom with his weeping mother.
Brown was represented by defence counsel Adrian Thompson while the state’s case was led by Tiffini Lyken and Abigail Gibbs.

Brown was indicted for the rape of a child under age 16 years old in the county of Demerara in which it was alleged that on August 28, 2016 he engaged in sexual penetration with a girl child.

In her address to the court after the unanimous verdict was announced, Justice Jo-Ann Barlow said being found not guilty of the offence Brown would see it as nothing but he should use it as a lesson to better his life.

She told Brown that she was speaking to him as a mother and not a judge since he was a young man and should avoid certain things when under the influence of alcohol.
Justice Barlow told Brown that he should do the right things and become an example to his younger siblings and to use the opportunity to become a decent person.
