One dead, three injured in Corentyne accident

A 42 -year- old man was killed and four other persons are  nursing serious injuries after the car they was traveling in slammed into a heap of sand on the Cromarty Public Road, East Berbice Corentyne.

Dead is Adrian Downer of Fyrish Village, Corentyne.

According to reports , just after midnight on Saturday, the car bearing registration PRR 8753 was proceeding west along the roadway at a fast pace when the  driver lost control  of the vehicle . He was reportedly under the influence of alcohol.
Police sources confirm a breathalyzer test was conducted and his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit.
Eyewitness recalled that after the car slammed  into the sand it crashed into a utility pole ,spinning around a few times before coming to a stop in the trench  while facing the opposite  direction from which it was headed.

When this newspaper visited the scene clothing and other articles belonging to the occupants littered the parapet and the car was still submerged in the trench.

A resident of Cromarty village said he heard the loud crash and came out of his home.
“ At first I though was like gunshot or suh then meh seh no man this different, so I come out and see a set of them still in the vehicle so we assisted in taking them out. One of them body was already lifeless ,” he said.
He noted the Downer was at the back seat  and sustained the  brunt of the impact when the side of the car crashed into the post.
The injured including the driver were taken to the Port Mourant Hospital and  two persons were subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam hospital. Downer was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Police are investigating the incident.
