A 72-year-old security guard on a bicycle was killed while returning home Friday night after a taxi driver ran into him on Dennis Street, Sophia.

Dead is Mohanram Kelawan of South Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara.

Police said initial investigations have revealed that both the motorcar, HC 7724, and the pedal cyclist were proceeding west along Dennis Street and at some point, the deceased reportedly rode into the path of the motorcar, causing a collision.

The cyclist was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver, a 52-year-old resident of Sophia, is in custody assisting with investigations.

According to Kelawan’s wife, Nandranie, the father of three had gone out to cut bamboo and drop it off at home when he was involved in the fatal accident.
