DWAIN Dick’s consistency and guile with his off-spinners helped him to capture six for 110 as Demerara beat the Guyana Select U-17s by an innings and 56 runs on the third and final day of their Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Hand-in-Hand Inter-county U-19 tournament clash.

After being bowled out for 180 in the first innings, in reply to Demerara’s huge 489 for 8, the U-17s batted again as Demerara enforced the follow-on.
Resuming on day three with the score at 11-1, the Under-17s soon found themselves in trouble as Dick snared three more wickets in the morning session to leave them wobbling at 70-4.

However, Yeudistir Persaud joined Andre Seepersaud at the crease and together they added 80 before the latter was caught by Robin Williams to give Dick his fifth scalp of the innings.

Seepersaud fell just short of his half-century, departing for 48 with the score at 150, to signal the beginning of the end for his team. Ashmead Nedd then bowled Lance Roberts comprehensively but with wickets tumbling around him, Persaud played a patient and mature innings to be left unbeaten on 90 when the final wicket fell with the U-17s total at 253.

Earlier Nedd took 5-38 in the first innings to finish with match figures of 8-70 while Dick had 7-150.
Demerara’s mammoth first-innings total of 446-8 declared was based hugely on West Indies U-19 and National player and man-of-the-match Bhaskar Yadram’s record 301 not out, with support from Andre Hinds (94) and Dwain Dick (30).

Meanwhile, Berbice beat Essequibo on Wednesday after they resumed from their 149 overnight and reached 222 all out from 84.5 overs in their first innings.
Opening batsman Alex Algoo top-scored with 111 and gained support from middle-order batsmen Kevlon Anderson and Javid Karim who contributed 36 and 15 runs respectively.
Essequibo in their second innings could muster only 145 all out in 55.2 overs

Captain Kevin Christian put up 14 while Kurt Lovell and Quintin Sampson added 22 and 27 runs respectively, but it was the number nine batsman, Joshua Jones, who top-scored with 39.

The effort by the Essequibo team was not enough, giving Berbice their first win of the tournament. Berbice in their second innings were 4 for 1 before winning by nine wickets.
Round two will commence tomorrow with Demerara doing battle with Berbice at the GCC ground while Essequibo go up against the Select Under-17 team at Everest. Matches are scheduled to commence at10:00hrs.
