THE efforts of relatives of a heavily pregnant Yarakita, North West District mother to seek medical attention for her were in vain on Wednesday, as the woman died shortly after giving birth to a baby boy.

At the same time, relatives of 35-year-old Sherene Abrahams, who gave birth to her sixth child on Monday are upset at the attitude of the community health worker (CHW) in the area who they noted refused to visit the woman even after she was told of her condition.
According to reports from the border community outside Mabaruma, Abrahams was experiencing labour pains on Wednesday morning and around 05:00hrs, her relatives contacted the health worker who lives in the area.

Reports are that the woman’s relatives visited the health worker a second time around 10:00hrs and reported that the woman was in desperate need of assistance.
“They went back to her but she say she had clinic in process and they should get the patient to hospital on their own,” a resident told this newspaper Wednesday evening.
Reports are that Abrahams’ condition began to deteriorate around midday on Wednesday and her relatives managed to contact the Mabaruma hospital.

Doctors at the hospital hurried into the remote area, located on the fringes of the Guyana border with Venezuela. However, when the team arrived around 14:00hrs, the woman had died but the baby was saved.
Reports are that an old lady from the village overlooked the delivery of the baby while relatives assisted.

A medical practitioner in the area noted however that Abrahams was told on several occasions that since she had prior complications, her delivery would have to be done in Georgetown.

“She refused to travel a few weeks ago,” the medical practitioner noted.
She added that Abrahams missed several of her clinic appointments and according to her; this may have led to the community health worker’s refusal to attend to her on Wednesday.
The baby boy is being cared for by nurses at the Mabaruma hospital.
