Jacobs, Narayan bowl MSC to first-innings honours against GCC
… Chandrika hits unbeaten 149, five-wicket haul for Johnson, Jacobs, Nedd, Suknanan and France

MALTEENOES Sports Club (MSC) spinners tore into the Georgetown Cricket Club’s (GCC) batting order late on the opening day to claim first-innings honours when play in the GCA’s Gise/Star Party Rentals first-division tournament ended yesterday at Bourda.
Off-spinners Steven Jacobs (5-41) and Vishal Narayan (4-34), combined to cause the dramatic collapse.

Through a combination of poor strokes and some excellent spin bowling, GCC slumped from a comfortable position of 63-1 to 121 all out off 30 overs.
With a first-innings lead of 78, MSC batting a second time reached seven without loss when bails were lifted at 17:30hrs.

Openers Nkosie Barker and Stephon Browne will resume today.
Earlier, after winning the toss and opting to bat, the visitors managed to score just 199 runs in 68 overs with Barker and former national youth player Kellon Carmichael, the principal scorers with 55 and 58 runs respectively.

Barker and Browne put together a 73-run stand to give the innings the perfect impetus before they fell apart to left-arm spinner Devon Lord (4-113) and leg-spinner Leon Johnson (5-25) who combined to take nine wickets.
The right-hander Barker was the more dominant, hitting nine fours and a six before Johnson provided the breakthrough with the wicket of Barker.

Thereafter, the Thomas Lands side lost two wickets, to slip to 117-3 at lunch.
Lord trapped Brown leg-before-wicket for 18, while Johnson had Marcus Watkins in similar fashion for nine.

The post-lunch session saw the hosts put further grip on the game with the last seven wickets, but Carmichael was the main source of inspiration for the visitors.
The talented all-rounder stood firm at one end to provide the much-needed resistance in an innings which was decorated with seven fours and a six before he became Johnson’s fourth victim.

Rawle Merell, having struck two fours and two sixes in a rapid unbeaten 23, and skipper Jacobs (11) were the other batsmen to have reached double figures.
Medium pacer Ronaldo Ali Mohamed (1-31), was the other successful bowler for the hosts.
Thereafter, the hosts’ openers Robin Bacchus and Winston Forrester laid a solid foundation, putting together 63 for the first-wicket, but a rapid decline began shortly after the opening stand was broken by Jacobs when he trapped Forrester lbw for 28.

Narayan removed Bacchus in similar fashion for 36 (4×4, 2×6) before Jacobs claimed the wickets of Martin Pestano-Bell (4), Ali-Mohamed (0) and Kennard Moonsammy (0), without further addition to the score.
Narayan then bowled Lord (10) and Johnson (14) before Jacobs completed his five-wicket haul with the wicket of Stephon Wilson (10). Rovaldo Phillips was run-out before Narayan finished off the innings.

Meanwhile, in the other games, hosts Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), replying to Everest Cricket Club’s first-innings 282 all out, were 194-6.
Test-discard batsman Rajendra Chandrika stroked an entertaining unbeaten 149 for the Camp Road side. Tagenarine Chanderpaul made 22. Bowling for the hosts, left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd was the best bowler, claiming 5-84. For the hosts Christopher Barnwell made 89.

Over at the Malteenoes Sports Club ground; Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) were bowled out for 141 against GNIC. Kishan Singh and Wazim Alli were the principal scorers with 28 and 24 respectively. Off-spinner Gajanan Suknanan claimed 6-39.
In reply, GNIC were skittled out for 139. Trevon France claimed a seven-wicket haul. Batting a second time GYO reached 9-1.
