THE Ministry of Education/National Sports Commission conducted a follow-up evaluation programme on the 28th February last at the Port Mourant Community centre for Primary and Secondary school teachers who attended the National Sports Commission cricket-coaching workshop last year at the said venue.

The three-day programme, which was carried out last year, saw male and female teachers from 20 schools drawn from New Amsterdam to Crabwood Creek, being tutored on the basics of cricket. Sessions were conducted by former Guyana national female and NSC level one (1) cricket coach, Latchman Yadram, who said, “This clinic sought to give a start in the foundation of coaching in both theory and practical”.

In addition, the three-day fundamentals in cricket coaching saw teachers being actively involved in lectures and several practical sessions. The participants were schooled on the basic roles of a coach, coaching styles and principles, understanding of coaching objectives, the warm-up, batting, bowling and fielding techniques.

The evaluation session got underway at 10:00hrs with Facilitator Latchman Yadram testing the previous knowledge of the teachers present. The teachers were eagerly engaged.

Port Mourant and Rose Hall Primary were invited to participate in a cricket match, whereby the teachers were involved in organizing, coaching, and managing the two teams.
Rose Hall Primary was victorious in the exciting eight-overs a side encounter. They chalked up an imposing 118 for the loss of five wickets off their allotment. Port Mourant Primary could only muster 34 when their eight overs expired.

At the end of the programme, the teachers were presented with their ‘Fundamentals in cricket coaching’ certificates.
