Heartened that sugar workers received their severance pay

Dear Editor,
I WAS pleased to see that the government has followed through with their promise and paid over 2 billion dollars of severance to sugar workers from plantations no longer operating. It is a heartening thing to see politicians keeping their word.

After having already supported the sugar industry with 32 billion dollars, or a little more than a billion dollars a month since coming to office, the administration again has tightened its belt and found even more money for the industry. Two billion dollars is no mean sum, and we should all not forget that these funds are coming from our individual pockets.
But the thing that is most important is that during a difficult period of transition for the industry, the government has demonstrated that it continues to be with sugar workers throughout. Severance is not being withheld for spiteful or vengeful reasons, but paid as soon as available, and that says something.
Regards
Malcolm Marshall
