BOTH Georgetown and West Bank Demerara prevailed in separate low-scoring encounters yesterday when play in the Demerara Under-17 Inter-association tournament continued at two venues in Georgetown.

Georgetown edged East Bank Demerara by eight runs at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground while West Bank Demerara triumphed over East Coast Demerara by two runs.

Batting first, after a late start, the City side’s innings never gained any sort of momentum, as they lost key wickets along the way to slump to 56-5 in the 26th over.
Medium pacer Sachin Singh (1-11), provided the first breakthrough with the wicket of Kareen Whitney (5), after he tried to accelerate the scoring.

A mid-pitch mix-up between Thameshwar Permaul and Garrick Persaud saw Permaul run-out for five, at 21-2. However, things went further uphill for Georgetown when left-arm spinner Sourav Singh (2-12) was brought into the attack. He trapped both Dwayne Dick (7) and Ariel Tilku (0) leg-before-wicket off consecutive deliveries to leave the City side at 37-4.

Persaud, in company with Jeremiah Benjamin, then stitched together a 19-run partnership before Georgetown lost three more wickets to decline even further.
Despite an unbroken eight-wicket stand of 39 between Wayne Bollers (16 not out) and Raynoldo Mohamed (12 not out), the innings limped to a close.
Marlon Boele (1-15) and GCC left-arm spinner Zakary Jodah (2-12), were the other successful bowlers.

In the run chase, Singh and Navindra Persaud added 29 before both were dismissed in the space of eight deliveries.
Dick removed Persaud for seven before Singh was run-out in a terrible mix-up with Yudister Persaud for 16. Furious about his dismissal, Singh hurled his bat against the dressing-room walls after storming off the field. His action immediately caused the venue staff to express their disappointment.

Meanwhile, those dismissals created panic in the batting side’s camp, as East Bank were bowled out for 98 in 39 overs.
Mavindra Dindyal top-scored with an unbeaten 16. Niron Bissu was the most destructive bowler, grabbing 3-16.
Earlier, the East Coast Demerara bowlers were able to keep a tab on the runs after their opponents decided to bat first.

It was a total bowling effort, as the West Demerara batsmen, barring Andre Seepersaud who attempted a positive innings, hitting four boundaries in his 29, all failed to make any impression. Nicholas Rajpot (13) and Avinash Gurdyal (10) were the other batsmen to have reached double digits.

Off-spinners Andrew Samaroo and Aaron Beharry shared five wickets, with Samaroo claiming 3-19 while Beharry had 2-12. Medium pacer Trevon Charles, who began the destruction finished with 2-24.

In reply, East Coast struggled, and were eventually bowled out for 108 in 43 overs. Charles top-scored with 23, while Beharry chipped in with an unbeaten 22.
Joshua Reddy and Usaardiva Balgobin were the most destructive bowlers, grabbing 3-11 and 3-33 respectively. Seepersaud took 2-11 while Rajesh Budram and Dominic Hissain took one wicket apiece.

The tournament concludes today with East Bank Demerara playing West Bank Demerara at the GCC ground.
