THE Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has announced that it will hire a private contractor to clean the parade route on the Saturday after the Mashramani celebrations.
For years, persons have complained about the atrocious condition of the usual parade route, Vlissingen Road and Irving Street, after the Mash celebrations.
Litter can be found in the drains and streets.

Director of Solid Waste Management Walter Narine, is hoping that this year the area could be cleaned before noon on Saturday.

“We plan to start cleaning the entire place at 4:00am on Saturday morning and we hope to be finished by 11:00am or 12:00pm,” said Narine during a press briefing at City Hall on Tuesday.

He noted that a contractor is yet to be identified. Narine believes that instead of sharing the work between the private contractors and the M&CC, the contractors would be better equipped to get the job done.
“Our resources are not there, so it would be wise to contract it to people who have resources to get that area cleaned early on Saturday,” he explained.
The parade is expected to commence at Thomas and Lamaha streets and head east to Vlissingen Road, then south along Vlissingen Road before entering the Jubilee Park from the south-western entrance at Hadfield Street.

VENDING SPOTS
Chairperson of the Social Development Committee, Monica Thomas, said as part of their effort to manage all aspects of the celebrations effectively and efficiently, they have identified spots along the route that persons could utilise to ply their trade.
Thomas said 230 spots have been already sold to 140 vendors. Deputy Director of Solid Waste Management, Floyd Rollins, said they have just over 600 more available.
According to Rollins, spots between Barr and Thomas Streets, Kitty, will be $10,000; Thomas to Lamaha streets $12,000; and from Church Street to D’Urban Park (Jubilee Park) $15,000.

The council advised persons to identify spots that are suitable for them, then approach the M&CC for further information and guidance.
