Shooting of unarmed vendor was reckless

Dear Editor,
FOR the citizens of our capital city it is always ‘another day another drama’ at the City Hall in Georgetown. More recently, it has been the slaying of a prisoner at the Bourda Outpost of the Georgetown City Constabulary by a City Constable, that brings to the fore once again the extraordinary level of poor leadership of the Council at the highest levels.
The city constable opening fire at a fleeing unarmed man who was not facing him, not attacking him, nor posing any danger to him or his colleagues at the station ,was just simply reckless and uncalled for. Why couldn’t the constable shoot the prisoner in a non-fatal area? Could he not have fired a warning shot? Could he not have used a baton instead of a gun?
At the end of this year we need to elect a mayor, a city council, appoint a new town clerk and senior administrators that will force all city constables to be retrained to abide by different rules of engagement. I think the time has come for the national police to take over this errant police department. But more importantly, I think it is time for Georgetown to get a new mayor and a new town clerk who can properly lead our capital in this modern enlightened period.
Regards
Amber Valentine
