AAG Awards Ceremony set for Saturday

COMING as no surprise, Upper Demerara’s Daniel Williams and Chantoba Bright, along with Christianburg’s Compton Caesar, and US-based athletes Winston George and Troy Doris are among some of the names nominated for awards at the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Awards Ceremony which will be held at the Umana Yana, come Saturday.

The award ceremony will feature six categories – male and female youth, junior and senior athletes based on their performances at local, regional and international meets throughout last year.
Williams who has been dominating headlines throughout 2017, should have no problem renewing his last year’s Youth Male Athlete-of-the-Year award.

Williams is pitted against jumper Inter-Guiana Games gold medallist Tortque Boyce and South American Youth Games 100m silver medallist Jermaine King. However with his World Youth 400m silver medal, Williams still has the edge over the other two.
For his historic Boys’ Under-20 100m win at the CARIFTA Games last year, Caesar leads the list of nominees in the Junior Male category, which he was also awarded last year. Also in the category are CARIFTA Games silver medallist Anfernee Headecker and Samuel Lynch.

2016 Senior Male Athlete-of-the-Year, Winston George is also a returning candidate. He comes up against Troy Doris, men’s javelin record-holder Leslain Baird and distance runner Cleveland Forde.

The Senior Female Athlete-of-the-Year category is being contested by Penn Relays silver medallist Natrena Hooper, Police’s Alita Moore and Tenisha Cort.
Junior Female category has four nominees, namely Joanna Archer, Toyan Raymond, Natricia Hooper and Onasha Rogers.

The Youth Female might just be the only closely contested race. Chantoba Bright heads the Youth Female list, which includes South American Youth Games silver medallist Kenisha Phillips, CARIFTA Games gold medallist Claudrice McKoy and South American Youth Games gold medallist, Deshanna Skeete.
