THERE will be an even spread of popular racing events when the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club’s 2018 calendar is released today.

The calendar will feature three instalments of the quarter-mile drag-racing action, three endurance races and three of the marquee circuit-racing events.
According to a source, the events are to ensure that all racing enthusiasts and competitors get a chance to enjoy at least three of their event types.
According to the source, the endurance meet will also take a model of the circuit event with a yearly championship being awarded at the end of the calendar year.

In addition to those events, the club has incorporated several karting events which are organised by the GT Motorsports in Georgetown.
President of the Club, Rameez Mohamed, noted the plan is to ensure that racing enthusiasts have an event for almost every month of the year.

Ryan Lue of Jamaica and Jeremy Ten-pow of Guyana congratulate each other during one of the GT Motorsports Grand Prix. The racing calendar 2018 will feature a number of local as well as exchange events.

“What we saw last year is a large number of persons not only competitors, but fans support one particular set of events and we want to encourage maximum support this year.”
“While I cannot release the dates just yet as the committee meets tonight (Thursday night), I can safely say that there is an even spread of events to ensure all racing lovers get something out of 2018,” Mohamed added.

Meanwhile a proposed shift in the legs of Caribbean Motor Racing Associations (CMRA) calendar will have to wait until next year.
The body, through its Trinidad representatives, was opting for a shift to make that country the season-opener in March instead of the usual Jamaica leg but plans were reverted to the original standing following issues.

The JAMWEST Raceway will continue to host the first leg set for mid-May following the hosting of its traditional Easter meet.
Barbados is set to host round three in early September with Guyana hosting the season finale and presentation during the second week of November.

Trinidad and Tobago are the defending country champions with the Riders championship won by Guyana’s Bryce Price, the Group Two title held by Barbados’ Mark Thompson and Group Three by Trinidad’s Paul Vieira.
The Group Four all-wheel-drive title was won last year by Guyana’s Andrew King with the two-wheel-drive end of things carted off for another year by Barbadian Mark Maloney.
