Police say drunk driver caused death of soldier

A MINIBUS driver was on Thursday charged for the death of Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Lance Corporal, Marvin Dodson who was struck down and killed in front of a popular nightclub at Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara (WBD) last Sunday.

Navin Rampersaud (31) of Schoonard, WBD appeared before Magistrate Rushell Liverpool at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to render assistance and failure to stop after the accident.

Rampersaud pleaded not guilty to all of the charges and was released on $500,000.

The matter is adjourned until January 8, 2018.

According to a police report, an intoxicated driver was driving a minibus south along the eastern carriageway allegedly at a fast rate when he collided with the victim who was at the time standing at the side of the roadway with his colleagues. The accident occurred around 03:10hrs on December 10 at Pouderoyen, WBD.

Dodson, of Cross Street, Alexander Village, was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital but was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.
