End violence against women and girls

– Guyana Chronicle takes a stand!

VIOLENCE against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today, the United Nations (UN) says.
As Guyana joins the rest of the world in observing 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (November 25-December 10), the women of Guyana Chronicle are joining the fight for gender equality, empowerment and the elimination of violence against women and girls.

Women need to drop this element of fear, stand up, speak out and support each other. Be involved in the construction, passing and implementation of laws that will protect women and girls from violence in any form.

Domestic violence, for me, means any act that results in physical, sexual or psychological harm. Gender-based violence is oftentimes done in private, so help cannot be made readily provided. We need to form ourselves into support groups in order to try to eradicate the ill-treatment of women and girls. Speak out!

Violence against women is a grave violation of human rights.

Linda Williams

It comprises physical, sexual and mental consequences as well as death. It negatively affects the well-being of women and prevents them from fully participating in society.
Civil society and women’s movements have advocated for gender-based violence to be high on national and international agendas. An unprecedented number of countries have instituted laws against all forms of violence. Challenges remain, however, in implementing these laws.
Women have the right to live free from violence. Women should have responsibilities similar to men because they are capable.

Every day women are victims of ill-treatment, either verbally or physically. Many stories are untold, so no one really knows the severity of these issues. Women who are victims of violence need to speak out because as famous actress, Nicole Kidman said, “violence against women is an appalling human rights violation, but it is not inevitable, we can put a stop to this”. One of the ways of ending violence against women is building sisterhood, so that members can encourage and mentor each other to be more empowered and overcome the pains of violence.
