Winfer Gardens defend title against fierce rivalry from North Georgetown Primary

AFTER heavy competition from North Georgetown Primary School (NGPS), Winfer Gardens Primary almost found themselves dethroned, as the champions of the North Georgetown District 11’s Zone 4 Inter-School Track Championships.
As the best of primary school athletes in the North Georgetown District took centre stage yesterday at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary, NGPS’s Raydell Paris and Kaiya McCaulay were two standouts who almost ended it all for Winfer Gardens.
Winfer Gardens finished the day with 166 points, just six points ahead of NGPS, who were initially thought to have been the winners before a follow-up tally of the points.
St Agnes retained their third place position, with 150 points. However, last year’s second place finishers St Margaret’s Primary, this year saw their team relegated to fourth place after only tallying 131 points.
St Angela’s Primary scored 89 points, while Marian Academy had 87 points, St Ambrose 83 points and School of the Nations ended with 30 points.
Notwithstanding their young ages, it was a day of fierce rivalry. Expectations pushed some to their limit while others were tearful and disappointed.

But young Raydell Parris was one who reaped nothing but success dominating the Boys’ Under-12 category throughout the day. The up-and-coming sprinter championed the 100m, 200m, and 400m events.
However, Winfer Gardens were not far behind. Dequan James finished in second place behind Parris in both the 100m and 200m events. St Agnes’ Jamo Ross, who won the 1000m in the category, finished second in the 400m behind Parris.
Parris later anchored his school to the win in the Boys’ open 4x100m.
In the Girls’ Under-8 category, little Kaiya McCaulay was a lot of speed in a small package. The seven-year-old finished first in the 80m dash, as well as in the 150m sprint. However, Marian Academy’s Kaitlyn La Rose was just a little more than she could handle in the 400m, and had to settle for second place.
Winfer Gardens, however, had their fair share of outstanding athletes, and Atalia Hinckson was one who hardly gave anyone a chance in the Girls’ Under-10 category, winning the 100m, 200m and 400m races.
There was also Nathan Mayers in the Boys’ Under-8 category, taking second in the 80m, but ruling the roost in the longer 150m and 400m races.
