THE Guyana Olympic Association’s (GOA) Commonwealth Games meeting of the Americas will begin today, with approximately 20 countries gathering for the two-day event.

K. Juman-Yassin, president of the GOA, told Chronicle Sport that all systems are in place for the meeting, but said it was highly unlikely that there would be representation from Dominica, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and Anguilla, since they’re still coping with the damage to their respective islands from Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
“Some delegates are not likely to be here because of the hurricane, but most of the other delegates have already started to arrive and everyone else will be here by the time we’re ready to start tomorrow (today,” said Yassin.
From 09:00hrs, in the Boardroom of the new GOA Headquarters at Liliendaal, governance will be discussed as the group will have an overview of the Commonwealth Games through 2022, as well as the view of partnership with other entities through the Commonwealth Games Federation.
Tomorrow, Acting President Moses Nagamootoo will declare the meeting open, and Dr George Norton, Minister of Social Cohesion, with the responsibility for Sport, will be joining United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Guyana and Suriname representative Sylvie Fouet as guest speakers.
The GOA related that tomorrow’s meeting will deal with a number of issues, where the Commonwealth Games Federation Americas body will hear from the Regional Anti-Doping Agency (RADO) and more importantly, representatives from Gold Coast; the host for next year’s Commonwealth Games.
The 21st (XXI) Commonwealth Games will be held in the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, April 4-15, 2018. It is the fifth time Australia will be hosting the Commonwealth Games.
