Taxi driver remanded for illegal possession of gun, ammo

A 27-year-old taxi driver who was busted at the Itaballi Police Checkpoint with a gun under his car bonnet, was on Tuesday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan on two firearm-related charges.

Dexter Waite of North Ruimveldt is alleged to have had a .32 revolver in his possession on September 17, at the Itaballi Police Checkpoint, Mazaruni River, when he was not a licensed firearm holder.

It is further alleged that on the same day and location, Waite had five live .32 rounds in his possession but he has denied both charges. Meanwhile, and his lawyer begged the court to release his client on bail on the ground that there were several special reasons including that there multiple persons were in the vehicle where the firearm was found.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Arwin Moore, however, objected to Waite being granted bail citing the prevalence of the charge. According to the prosecutor, on the day in question, the police searched Waite’s vehicle and found a gun concealed under its bonnet. Moore pointed out that Waite was the driver of the vehicle and had control of it.

The Chief Magistrate ruled in the prosecution’s favour and remanded Waite until October 12, when the matter will be recalled at Bartica Magistrate Court.
