Georgetown beat Lower Corentyne by five wickets

GEORGETOWN completed a fighting five-wicket win inside two days over Lower Corentyne yesterday at the Lusignan Community Centre ground.

Set 157 to win, Georgetown reached their target for the loss of five wickets.
Scores in the match: Lower Corentyne 165 and 145; Georgetown 154 and 157-5.
In the morning, former National left-arm spinner Kasim Khan completed a five-wicket haul, finishing with 5-49, which ensure his team secured a 11-run lead.
Georgetown had started the morning at 154-8, were looking to overall the visitors 165, but their hopes were crushed inside the first two overs of the day.

Both overnight batsmen Christopher Barnwell and Ahmead Nedd fell without any addition to their overnight score of 73 and 0 respectively.
Nedd was the first to depart, bowled by Nial Smith before Khan wrapped up the innings when Barnwell was bowled in the left-arm spinner’s first over of the morning.
Khan and Smith were complemented by spinners Devon Clements (2-21) and Kevlin Umroa (2-52), who contributed to the steady inroads late on day one.

Batting a second time, the visitors’ top-order batting was again exposed as they reached 75-4 at lunch.
The innings started in disastrous fashion, after Alex Algoo was trapped leg before wicket to Barnwell without scoring.
Jason Sinclair and Kelvon Anderson added 33 for the second wicket before the spinners played their part before the interval.

Leg-spinner Steven Sankar bowled Sinclair for 13. Eight runs later Anderson was bowled by new Guyana Jaguars recruit Ramaal Lewis for 24, while Jonathan Foo was bowled by Gajanan Suknanan for five at 49-4.
However, Seon Hetmyer and Clements navigated their way to the interval without any further casualties.

But soon after the break, the visitors were left wobbling again, after Lewis and Sankar claimed the last six wickets.
The off-spinner Lewis picked up four of the six wickets to finish with figures of 5-35, while Sankar who removed Hetmyer for a top score of 53, ended with figures of 3-29. Akeem Hinds (23), was the only other batsman reached double figure.

Barnwell then made a composed 79 in the run chase to set up the win.
He received support from Raymond Perez 39 and Robin Bacchus 18. Lewis (13) and Kellon Carmichael (0) were the other two batsmen dismissed. Sunil Singh (3 not out) and Dextor Solomon (3 not out) were at the crease when victory was achieved.
Khan again was the main threat, claiming four wickets, while Smith was the other successful bowler.

Meanwhile, in scores in the other second round of matches saw Upper Corentyne facing East Coast at Port Mourant, West Berbice taking on Essequibo at Bush Lot and East Bank going up against West Demerara at Tuschen.

East Bank 171 all out. (S. Rutherford 67; Richi Looknauth 5-46).

West Berbice replying to Essequibo’s first innings of 196, were bowled out for 146. Ricardo Adams and Anthony Adams had figures of 4-32 and 5-34 respectively.
Upper Corentyne 233 all out (Joshua Ramsammy 65, Chanderpaul Hemraj 5-22). In reply East Coast 259 all out. Amir Khan 92, Brain Sattuar 59, Joshua Persaud 62.
