Taxi driver gets four years

…fined $1.2M on drug trafficking charge

CITY Magistrate, Sunil Scarce, on Wednesday sentenced a 40-year-old taxi driver to four years imprisonment for having five pounds of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Raymond Peters of Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, was also fined $1.2M after he confessed to the charge which read that on August 14, at Friendship Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), he had five pounds of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Peters told the court that he was experiencing difficulties and trafficked the drug to get money. The magistrate after considering Peters early guilty plea and the need to prohibit others from contemplating to commit such crimes, sentenced Peters to four years imprisonment.

According to reports, the police acting on a ‘tip-off’ intercepted Peters’ vehicle and found over two kilos of compressed marijuana in the back seat. Officers found on the back seat of the vehicle, in a box, four taped parcels of compressed cannabis, weighing approximately five pounds.
