Speeding police constable kills pedestrian, injures others

Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at 17:30hrs Sunday on the Catherine, Mahaicony Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD) that resulted in the death of a pedestrian.
Dead is Winston Small, 51, of Lot 2 Catherine Village, Mahaicony, ECD.

Investigations revealed that motorcar PWW 1614 with three occupants and driven by Police Constable Jarren Huntley, of Eldorado Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB).
Reports indicate that the police constable was proceeding east along the northern carriageway allegedly at a fast rate, when he swerved south to avoid an uneven patch on the road. In doing so he lost control of the vehicle which collided with pedal cyclist Jaden Alleyne, 13 years, of Calcutta, Mahaicony, ECD.

The vehicle then swerved back north and collided with two pedestrians, (the deceased) and Lawrence Semple, 43, of Catherine Village, ECD; thereafter it ended up in a yard on the said northern side of the road.

As a result everyone received injuries. They were taken to the Mahaicony Hospital, where Winston Small was pronounced dead on arrival and two of the occupants of the car namely; Delroy Hutson, 35 and Odari Reynolds, 23, both of Eldorado Village, WCB, were treated and sent away, while the other Fitzroy Goodridge, 23, of the said Village, is admitted for observation.
Meanwhile the driver, cyclist and the other pedestrian were transferred to the GPHC in stable conditions. The cyclist was later sent away.
