THE Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) is in the process of recruiting rangers to curb vandalising of infrastructure in communities.
According to CH&PA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lelon Saul, the rangers will be tasked with patrolling the schemes and ensuring there is no vandalising of infrastructure.
Saul told the Guyana Chronicle that candidates are required to have a “sound secondary education,” will be conducting some amount of enforcement work and will be employed directly under the CH&PA.
These rangers, as explained by Saul, would be required to follow the regulations governing the housing schemes and would have to act within the confines of the agreement of sale between the authority and homeowners.
While employing these rangers should aid in abating vandalism, the authority will also be seeking to mark its hardware components to protect against theft.
The CH&PA is currently in the mobilisation phase of its electrification project which seeks to provide electricity for some 16 housing schemes by December.
Saul said the electrical wires and transformers used in this project will be marked.
Thus far this year, there has been a general and significant decrease in the number of vandalism reports to the authority.
One major report of vandalism this year occurred along the East Bank of Demerara where one water-supply network was installed by the CH&PA.
To remedy this act of vandalism and rehabilitate the network, a sum of approximately $40M has to be expended. There has been some amount of damage to roadways too, but Saul affirmed that vandalism has decreased.
