RANKS from E’ Division (Upper Demera-Upper Berbice) successfully carried out several marijuana busts over the past two weeks, as well as, a bust on illegal firearm and ammunition.

The perpetrators were placed before the court and were all remanded to prison.
Courtney Sinclair called ‘Rastaman”, a 37-year-old Amerindian farmer of Wiruni, Upper Berbice River and Amelia’s Ward, Linden, admitted to owning a white salt bag that was retrieved by ranks of the Ituni Police Station after conducting a search on a mini bus heading to Linden.

The white salt bag contained seven parcels wrapped with black plastic and transparent scotch tape in which a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis was found amounting to 11.804 kilograms. Sinclair admitted that it was his drugs and that he was taking the parcels to Linden to sell. He appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate Court before her Worship Judy Latchman where he pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded to prison.

Gravey Peters

On Saturday 24th June, 2017, ranks from Mabura Police Station during a stop and search at Mabura Hill retrieved an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The occupants of the vehicle were two security guards, 38-year-old Garvey Peters of 16, Peters Hall East Bank Demerara and 30- year-old Alvis Moore of 11, Chateau Margot, East Coast Demerara (ECD). They are both employees of the Professional Guard Service (PGS). A search was conducted on the vehicle in their presence, and a black plastic bag was found at the back in a left side compartment in the extra cab containing a .32 semi-automatic pistol with the serial number filed off and nine .32 rounds of auto ammunition.

While being interrogated, Garvey Peters claimed that he found the firearm in an excavator at Frenchman Backdam where they went to repossess the said excavator. He said he

showed the firearm to Alvis Moore and they concealed it with an intention to lodge it with the police. Neither of them however reported it to the police until after the police made the discovery. They were arrested and charged with the offence of Possession of Firearm and Ammunition without license. On Wednesday, last, they appeared at the Linden Magistrate Court before Magistrate Clive Nurse and pleaded not guilty to the charges. They were both remanded to prison.

On Tuesday ranks from the Amelia’s Ward Police Station conducted a search exercise in the home of JamesTorres, during which a quantity of cannabis was found. Torres admitted to ownership of the illegal substance amounting to 27 grams and was subsequently arrested and charged with Trafficking in Narcotics. On Wednesday 28th June, 2017 he appeared before his worship Clive Nurse and pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded to prison.

Similarly, 57-year-old Colwyn Sander of Lot 206, Wismar Housing Scheme had in his possession a quantity of cannabis amounting to 78.8 grams. Ranks from Wismar Police Station were on mobile patrol on the Wisroc Back Road when they stopped and searched Sandar who was subsequently arrested and charged with trafficking in narcotics. He also, appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse where he pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded to the Georgetown Prison.
