Man jailed , fined for ganja possession

A Norton Street, Bagotstown man was Wednesday sentenced to three years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a drug possession charge.
Twenty- five year old Carlsdale Aaron of 180 Norton Street, Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to the offence. The charge stated that on June 26, 2017 in Georgetown, he had 102 grams of marijuana in his possession.

Police said that on the day in question the defendant was seen acting in a suspicious manner while having a black plastic bag in his hand. When the police patrol approached him he dropped the bag and escaped. He was later apprehended and taken back to the said location where the bag was dropped and the leaves, seeds and stems were found.
Aaron was told of the offence and was escorted to the Brickdam Police Station where the drug was weighed in his presence and amounted to 102 grams. In his response to the court, Aaron apologised, saying that he knew what he did was wrong, but he was looking for a job since he did not want to steal and he needed the money to support his family. Aaron was sentenced to three years and fined GYD$153,000.
