Venezuelans fined for entering Guyana illegally

THREE Venezuelans were ordered to pay a fine of $15,000 each or serve two weeks imprisonment after they were charged with entering Guyana illegally.
Gilda Yudith Garcia Barreto, 18; Gemony Cardina, 29 and Jorkjana Mayuslin Vilera,all pleaded guilty to the charge, which alleged that they entered Guyana illegally on May 6 and April 20, 2017 by sea and disembarked at Eteringbang without the permission of an immigration officer.
When the three women were asked by Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan why they came to Guyana, they all stated that “things are bad in Venezuela” and that they were in search of work to provide for their family. They did not have legal representation. The Chief Magistrate, through the aid of an interpreter, ordered that after they pay their fine or serve two weeks in default, that they be escorted to the nearest port of exit.
