GUYANESE cyclist Aubrey Gordon, a three-time Olympian, won silver and Cyril Hunte, another former national cyclist, got bronze at the World Masters Games on Saturday in Auckland, New Zealand.
The road cycling criterium race, with 44 starters in the 60-64 male category, was won by American Joseph Cullinan and the trio clocked in at 36 minutes, 51 seconds.
However, former national cycling coach and two-time Olympian, Victor Rutherford, who is based in Florida, was disappointed that one of them did not win gold.
“They have planned and worked hard for over six months with the Masters in mind. Anyhow,with the road races scheduled for next Sunday, hopefully we will have the elusive gold,” Rutherford said on Saturday.
Cyril Hunte, who is based in California, is the brother of former national champion,Neville Hunte. Cycling fans would recall that Cyril Hunte was once a fierce competitor here alongside national stars of yesteryear like Aubrey Gordon, Randolph ‘Randy’ Toussaint, Errol McClean and Joelyn Joseph.
Last year after the US National Championships, Gordon and Hunte set their eyes on the World Masters Games and plans were put in place .
Rutherfod said that Hunte had a really good build up, placing and winning in many events prior to leaving for New Zealand. However, Gordon, now considered to be the ‘Shivnarine Chanderpaul’ of cycling, was hampered somewhat by job commitment and weather.
Gordon was a gold medalist at the 2009 UCI World Masters Criterium Road Race in Sydney, Australia in the men’s 50-54 years age category. He represented Guyana at the 1980, 1984 and 1988 Olympics.
